We have some exciting news coming from Great Meadows Marsh! The Salt Marsh Steward program officially kicked off on April 2.
The program consists of three crew leaders who train and supervise a group of twelve high school students from Stratford and Bunnell High Schools. We worked with the town of Stratford and the high schools to recruit and hire the stewards. This exciting opportunity gives the local students a paid experience in conservation and a chance to get involved in the project.
So far, the students have been outstanding. The stewards alone have planted at least 10,000 plants around the salt marsh. In addition to planting, the crew have been picking up trash and assisting in the removal of Phragmites roots.
But it’s not all serious work for these students - there is still plenty of time set aside for learning and birding! The crew leaders have been educating the stewards on the plant species they are planting and have set aside time for bird watching. For many students this is their first job, and they are doing incredible work.
